The play in five steps

  1. 01

    Step 1: Scan the stack

What a company runs, and what it just stopped running, is public. Most teams only ever look at the first half.

    • Scan the target list with BuiltWith and TheirStack.
    • Store each scan in Clay and compare it with the previous snapshot. The change is the signal, not the current state.
    • Rescan monthly. A quarterly scan finds removals after the replacement is already signed.
  2. 02

Step 2: Split added from removed

A company that just bought a competitor and one that just dropped it are two different conversations and must never share a sequence.

    • Competitor added: they just bought, so you are early for the renewal.
    • Competitor removed: they just left, so they are actively choosing a replacement.
    • Record the first-seen or last-seen date on every change.
  3. 03

    Step 3: Score and prioritize

Removal outranks addition every time. One is an open window, the other is a reminder for later.

    • Weight removals highest and work them this week.
    • Weight additions by typical contract length in the category, then schedule the touch about 90 days before the likely renewal.
    • Claude can read the job posts and site copy to confirm the change is real and not a scanner glitch.
  4. 04

Step 4: Find whoever owns the category

The person who runs the tool every day feels where it breaks. The CEO usually does not.

    • Identify the function that owns the category with Apollo.
    • Get a work email with Findymail.
    • Check on LinkedIn that they still hold the role, and re-verify the email with BounceBan on the send day.
  5. 05

Step 5: Run the displacement sequence

You know exactly what they use, so you can be specific about where it tends to break at their stage.

    • Switch track through Smartlead: noticed the change, where that tool usually breaks at their stage, a direct ask.
    • Renewal track: the same shape, timed to arrive before the renewal window.
    • A LinkedIn DM through HeyReach in parallel on both tracks.
    • Never criticize the competitor by name. Describe the failure mode and let them recognize it.
